Routine outpatient surgeries
Open Clinic Encounter in Chart
Go to "Procedures- OR" tab
Select orders on the left side of that tab
Look up the correct surgical order set
Oculoplastics use Dr. Tao
Retina use Dr. Mehta
Cornea/General use Dr. Garg or Dr. Fox
Order set consists of the following two components
Case request order --> edit as appropriate for the case (surgery, side, anaesthesia, etc)
preop nursing orders (i.e. npo, place IV line, start preop drops)
Sign orders and give the chart to Ashley or Alex, the surgical coordinators, who will work on getting preop approval and surgery dates set up
Cases will basically always be done over at GHEI in our surgical center there
Inpatient/emergency department surgeries
Go to Manage Orders tab
Enter Case Request from Inpatient Admissions into the Orders section
Select patient class as Inpatient Admission
Enter in all the case information and specify in the scheduling box when you want the surgery to occur
Call the OR to get the case added to the surgery board. Note, the OR only accepts scheduling requests for non-urgent cases during weekdays and regular business hours. You can only schedule same-day urgent cases after hours or on the weekends.
Urgent surgeries
For urgent outpatient surgeries notify Ashley or Alex the surgery is an urgent add on. They will have you add in the note some fluff to get insurance emergency approval (e.g. patient requires urgent surgery for vision threatening condition that can result in disability if not promptly treated)
If it is truly an emergency surgery that can't wait for option 1 then the other option is to have the patient go to the ED and perform the surgery under the ED visit encounter
